Bed Bug Heat Treatment Guide

Can Bed Bugs Come Back After Heat Treatment?

If you've already paid for one treatment that didn't work, this is the question that matters most. A properly run heat treatment kills every life stage — eggs, nymphs and adults — in the rooms treated, in a single visit. Bed bugs don't 'come back' from a correctly heated room. What does happen, occasionally, is a new introduction from outside, or bugs surviving in a spot that never reached lethal temperature. This page explains the difference, how we prevent the second one, and what happens if you ever see a bug again.

Does heat treatment really work?

Yes — when the coldest point in the room reaches lethal temperature and stays there. Bed bugs and their eggs die at 45-47°C. We hold 55-60°C at the coldest monitored point for long enough to soak heat right into mattresses, bed frames, skirting boards and furniture voids. Unlike sprays, heat doesn't rely on a bug walking across a treated surface, and pesticide resistance makes no difference: no bed bug survives being cooked. That's why a single heat visit replaces the two-to-four visit cycle of a chemical treatment.

Why some treatments fail

When we're called in after another firm, the cause is almost always the same: the room was heated, but not evenly. Air temperature near the heater reads 60°C while the inside of a divan base, the back of a wardrobe or a gap behind the skirting sits at 40°C — and bugs survive there. A single thermometer on the wall can't catch that. The fix is multiple wireless probes placed in the hardest-to-heat spots, read live throughout the cycle, with fans repositioned until every probe passes. We don't finish until they all do, and you get the temperature log as proof.

Does heat kill bed bugs in walls and eggs?

Heat moves through materials, which is its big advantage over spray. Sustained heat penetrates skirting gaps, plug socket voids, floorboard edges and the inside of furniture, reaching bugs and eggs that chemicals never touch. Eggs are actually the life stage sprays struggle with most — the shell protects the embryo — but they die at the same temperature as adults. In a correctly monitored heat cycle there's no hatch-out two weeks later, because there's nothing left to hatch.

When bugs do turn up again: re-introduction

A heat-treated room has no residual protection — so if bed bugs are carried back in, they can start again. The usual routes are a suitcase from a hotel stay, second-hand furniture, a visitor's bag, or an untreated neighbouring flat in a block. That isn't the treatment failing; it's a new infestation. Our aftercare advice covers how to cut the risk: check luggage after travel, inspect second-hand items before they come indoors, and tell us if neighbours have a problem so we can advise on the shared walls.

What our 6-month guarantee covers

Every treatment comes with a written 6-month guarantee. If you see live bed bugs in a treated room during that time, call us and we'll inspect. If they're present, we re-treat free of charge. Because our heat cycle is monitored and logged, re-treatment calls are rare — but the guarantee is there so you're never left paying twice for the same problem.

FAQs

How soon after heat treatment are bed bugs gone?

Immediately. Heat kills on contact with lethal temperature, so by the end of the cycle every bug and egg in the treated rooms is dead. You can sleep in your bed the same night.

Is it normal to see a bed bug after heat treatment?

Occasionally you may find a dead one in a seam or crevice in the days after — that's normal. A live, moving bug after treatment is not, and you should call us straight away under your guarantee.

Can bed bugs survive heat treatment by hiding?

Only if the hiding spot never reaches lethal temperature. That's exactly why we place probes in the coldest spots — inside bed bases, behind headboards, in drawer voids — and keep the heat on until every probe passes.

Can I do heat treatment for bed bugs myself?

Not reliably. Domestic heaters and steamers can't raise a whole room's coldest points to lethal temperature evenly, and without monitoring you can't tell what's been missed. DIY attempts often scatter bugs into other rooms.

Do I need a follow-up visit?

No. Heat treatment is a single-visit service. A follow-up only happens if you report live bugs within the 6-month guarantee period.
